Thomas Fitzpatrick 18211821

Thomas Fitzpatrick 1821

Back to List

My ancestor, Thomas Fitzpatrick came to NSW Australia prior to his marriage here in 1862. He came from Queens County which is stated on all records found here. He died here in 1891. His age as stated on his on his children's birth certificates, of which he was the informant, gives his birth year as being 1821 and 1824. His death certificate show him as being born in 1821. The children were James, Mary, Annie and William. His father is down as William Fitztatrick and mother's name ' not known'. His wife was Julia Buckley.

Thomas came to Australia possibly in the 1850's. He ran away from Ireland to come here and his father sent his sister out to find him but he refused to return home so she left without him. When he left Ireland he had been studying for the Priesthood at Maynooth Seminary, had a serious argument with his piers and left before being ordained. All I know is that he came from Queens- Laois County. I have found a shipping register of the arrival of a Thos Fitzpatrick on the 'William Jardine' in 1841 age 23. His native place was Knocksha, Queens Co. the writing is not terribly clear so this may not be the correct spelling.

Hoping someone can advise.

Rosemary

  • Rosemary.

I have the sister of Thomas Fitzpatrick in my family tree in Australia. Sister Anne also arrived in Australia in 1841 on the "William Jardine" as a Bounty Immigrant.

    Hi Kevin,

It was nice to hear from you. I have looked at this Thomas re William Jardine, with much interest. I see the Ann Fitzpatrick on this ship married a convict and seems to have disappeared from history. Oral family history tells us that Thomas' sister was possibly Martha and that his father sent her out here to bring him home and that he refused to go so she returned to Ireland without him. Thomas is my great great grandfather through his daughter Mary Stanford née Fitzpatrick. The information I have came through my grandmother Sylvia, his granddaughter. Of course oral history is often in accurate so I am keeping an open mind on this. All information on the William Jardine seems to point to him. Have you been able to decipher the writing re Knocksha? This is the only reference to a Thomas Fitzpatrick from Queens County at this time, arriving in Australia, thatI can find. What is your connection?

  • Thanks for the reply Rosemary.

I have Thomas's sister Anne and Thomas both arriving in Australia in December 1841 on the William Jardine.

in 1842 Anne applies to marry Henry Herbert ( my ggrandfather) in Bathurst, NSW.

NSW BDM has a marriage record as well i have seen in their records.

I have been unable to follow up anything on Anne after hat marriage in1842.

My ggrandfather Henry Herbert is next found in 1856 getting married to Susan West in Parramatta NSW.

I have full records after this marriage.

A mystery at present as to where she went.

maybe we need to find the Irish records to see if there was a sibling Martha?

Re. Knockaha.  I find this as a name for a Hill 659 feet high in Queens County.  being 5 miles west of Rathdowney.  They probably lived in the vicinity of the hill and thus took the name as a locality.

  • Hello Kevin,

I am back into the family history and trying to break down my brick wall for THOMAS FITZPATRICK. At this stage, I am fairly convinced that your Ann and my Thomas were the siblings on the William Jardine 1840. It would make comparing notes so much easier if we could do it by private email. My address is glensheerose@bigpond.com if you are interested. I am in Toowoomba in Queensland.

    Cheers,

    Rose
