The First Irish Parliament, Dáil Éireann, was established in 1919 coinciding with the outbreak of the Irish War of Independence. It occured as the Irish officials who had been elected to Westminster refused to recognise the British parliament and instead established their own in Dublin.

On the 12th of September 1919, the British government declared the Irish Dáil to be an illegal entity, refusing to recognise a parliament on Irish soil.
