Hello Fellow Researchers, I am researching Michael Fitzpatrick who was born in 1807 and was from Tintore. In 1825 at the age of 17 he traveled to Roscrea and enlisted in the 97th Regiment of Foot. The 97th was a new Regiment. The British government had authorized an increase of 4 Regiments of Foot and so the 97th came into being. Michael enlisted in May of 1825 so he must have been one of the early recruits. He was paid a bonus, I think, of 4 pounds, 4 shillings. The 97th was sent to Ceylon and after eleven years returned to England and then Michael Volunteered for Service in Canada and was transferred to the 83rd of Foot. After five years in Canada he returned to the British Isles and a few years later was pensioned. I found a birth of a Michael in Aghaboe Parish for 1 Nov 1807. The father was Ned Fitzpatrick and the mother was Mary Doyle. I am wondering if anyone else is researching either of these names in Aghaboe. I can't say for an absolute fact that he was born in Aghaboe or that he was born in Tintore but he did list these places as his home town and home parish.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The record you located sounds very promising.

Fitzpatrick was a very common surname in Aghaboe parish in the 19th century. There were 44 Fitpatrick records in the Tithes for Aghaboe including two Edwards but none of the records showed Tintore. Likewise the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the parish showed many Fitzpatricks but none in Tintore.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you will match someone who has Fitzpatrick connections and know more about the family.

  • Roger, Thanks for your reply. I was hoping for someone who knows something about the locality to write back. I know about the origins of Michael Fitzpatrick because of his miliatry records. I am trying to find an Autosomal DNA match from someone from the area around Tintore. I have many matches with ancestryDNA and FTDNA but I have no way right now of figuring out which ones are from County Laois. I have a couple of prospects in England who can provide the necessary DNA to triangulate but they haven't written back. The descendants of Michael ended up in England and America and I think Australia. Please let me know your username for either Ancestry.com and/or FTDNA and I will check to see if I have a match with you. Any Fitpatrick descendants would interest me also. I have participated in the Fitzpatrick family DNA project at FTDNA and I have upgraded to 111 markers.

  • I looked at his record again and I realize that he only got 4 shillings to enlist. I noticed, that on the list you sent, the places where Fitzpatricks were domiciled are quite close to Tintore. I assume that when Michael enlisted in the 97th of Foot that he walked to Roscrea. From what I have gathered the officers of the 97th of Foot sent out groups all over Great Britain to enlist people but that the majority of recruits came from Ireland. Michael did not read or write from what I can tell so I don't know how he knew about the recruitment at Roscrea except by word of mouth.

I will forward your message to our parish liaison in Roscrea and see if he can add any advice.

Just so you know, I'm one of the volunteers who respond to messages. There are about seven of us. I don't have any Laois/Fitzpatrick connections. FYI my Gedmatch number is T690844.

  • Yeah, the connection is likely back in the 1700s.

  • By any chance was your family living in Aghaboe at that time?
