I am trying to find more about the ancestors of my great great grandmother Anne Nestor/Nester.
Her father was either Patrick or James Patrick Nester/or who was still alive inj 1864 when letters were exchanged.. Anne had a sister, Ellen. Anne migrated as a single young woman to South Australia in 1854 when Ellen would have been too young to come without her parents. Ellen came later in 1859.
Anne was born about 1834 while Ellen was born about 1841, Ellen in Ballymena, Co Antrim, according to the 1859 passenger list. Anne always told family she was "from Clare" which everyone assumed to be Co. Clare. No other place was mentioned by either of the sisters, as far as I know. However on both passenger lists both sisters had previously been domestic servants in Co.Offaly/ Kings.
I am wondering whether Anne might originally have come from the townland of Clara in Offaly, though I have not found any Nestors there in Griffiths or in the Tithes.
Any advice would be most welcome. I expect to be visiting Ireland in August this year.

Dear Carricktown
Thanks so much for your suggestions and many apologies for the delayed acknowledgement. Had lost my password.
Can you tell me whether Clara is pronouned similarly to Clare? In Australia they would sound rather different. Clare would rhyme with where, while Clara would rhyme with O'Mara. I am wondering whether my family have been confused about Anne Nestor coming from Co. Clare. And had wondered about Clara, Co. Offaly. Another thought was that the family was living in Co. Clare (or Co. Antrim where her sister Ellen was supposed to have been born) and the two sisters were working, say in domestic service in Co. Offaly.
Again many thanks on my behalf.

No problem - just glad to be able to help
Yes they sound completly different. Clar - a (co offaly)
Clare ( or the girls name Claire) would rhyme with where.
It might be worth dropping a mail to the historical societies in each county and asking about servant registry (if there was such a thing)
Did I mention there was assisted passage from Kings County on quite a large scale during this time - organised by a priest Fr Patrick Dunne.
See if you can open the attached file

yes, you mentioned him before. I looked into him and found that the ship he organised went to Queensland, a long way from South Australia where Anne and Ellen Nestor arrived. They also arrived before his ship in 1862, Anne in 1854 and Ellen in 1859
interesting though

Dear JenniThe very same Ellen Nestor was my great grandmother! I have her DoB as 1844, but your date of 1841 confirms other information we have that indicates 1841. So, I have just changed the date. Here are the notes from our Family Tree Maker program:
Ellen Nestor is believed to have come to Australia with her Uncle, Patrick Nestor, who lived at Macclesfield - probably on Nestor Rd, where my sister, Ellen, and her husband, Rod Fisher's used to live. Also in the group of immigrant’s was Jane, daughter of Patrick and cousin of Ellen. Ellen later went to live with her sister, Anne, who married Christian Theel of Gumeracha on 29/1/1858. (we have her name spelled Ann and Anne. Do you know which is correct?)
Patrick was born, according to a note in Ellen Fisher's records, in about 1780s. Ellen F thinks Patrick more likely born about 1800 and Jane later than 1815, because she thought her mother, Bessie had said Jane and cousin Ellen were of similar age, and great friends.
However, Anne Nestor's marriage certificate lists her father as Patrick, so that clouds her relationship with cousin Jane, said to also be daughter of Patrick???? We have Ann and Ellen’s father as James Patrick!
Ellen’s Death Certificate says she was 87 when she died - which would make her DoB 1841, not 1844. Marriage age is listed there as 21, which confirms 1841 as birth year as her marriage was 1862. When she died, she had 5 living sons and 2 living daughters. 3 boys and 3 girls had pre deceased her - total 13. There are 14 listed on Noel Talbot's family tree - but there are two boys who died at about 1 yr old with the same name
Ellen Nestor came to Australia later than Ann as Anne had become very homesick and she was to keep her company. Arrived in Glenelg in 1858 and she was 17 yrs old. Anne was already married and Ellen went to Gumeracha to live with Anne and Christian. Ellen's marriage to Theophilus Otto Talbot took place on 20/5/1862 at St Mary's Church Main South Road ( near Daws Rd) St. Marys (Adelaide suburb). Canon Dove officiated. This is an Anglican Church.
A (previous) marriage between Theophilus Talbot and Bridget O'Dea took place 2 yrs earlier at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church on the corner of Main South Road and Bains Road, Morphett Vale. She died of typhoid 17 days later.
Ellen and Theophilus had had 14 children, the 5th of whom was Ellen Amelia. Ellen Amelia was, born 11th Feb, 1869, died 29 Oct 1952. She married Robert James PENNY at Mt Gambier SA on 2 Jan 1896. They had 3 children, Harold George, Robert John and Elizabeth Ellen (Bessie), my mother.
My notes on James Patrick are as follows:
The Nestors were from Ballymena, Northern Ireland. The family lived on an estate. The father was the butcher and the mother helped to look after the children. Their employer was Lord Tullamore (or Tulliver).
My sister Ellen says “this confusing repetitive use of names can be attributed to the fact that families at that time appear to have used the same names over and over. The documents we have bear this out. Presumably his brother Patrick "wheelbarrow" Nestor lived in Nestor Rd Macclesfield. The Patrick and Jane Nestor that you have dates for are probably relatives from the previous generation. The cousin Jane was about the same age as Ellen)
I have further information from a book, "Macclesfied - Reflections along the Angas" that I can send if you are interested.

We are third cousins once removed I think! I am thrilled to hear what you have written. Some I had known, some I had not. I had your mother Elizabeth Ellen in my tree for example. I had not known that Ellen went to Gumeracha because Ann was homesick. But what you have shared gives more scope for research than what I knew, as far as tracing the Nestors back to ireland.
I have a picture of Ellen and her daughters and one of Ann Nestor and Christian Theel. Spelling Ann or Anne, Nestor or Nester doesn't matter since both the sisters were illiterate (made their mark at marriage, not signed). I also have a copy of a letter written by Theophillus Talbot to Christian and Ann in 1864. Happy to share these with you.
I live in Perth, Western Australia (where are you?) and last week returned from a trip to UK and Ireland. I grew up in Victoria but my mother was born and grew up in South Australia. She was the great grand daughter of Ann Nestor.
