I'm seeking information about my g-g-grandfather Daniel Considine. I have a letter that he wrote to my g-grandmother, Margaret Considine Bowen from 1857 from Shannon Harbour. I think he may have been connected somehow with the steamships on the river since he mentioned them a few times and seemed to have traveled. I don't know if they lived in Shannon Harbour or perhaps in Banagher neither of which is listed as a parish.

I gather that all but one of his children emigrated to the US (New York) They were: Denis 1832-1910, Margaret 1842-1895,  Winifred 1841-?, Ann, Daniel 1843, and possibly a couple of others. I think there was one still in Ireland, Ellen.

I have visited Shannon Harbour and had some genealogical research done, but it wasn't very helpful. I would like to know who was the mother of this gang, and if Ellen was married, to whom?

  • Hello Judith,

My grandfather is John (Jack) Considine, He married my Grandmother Amy Kathleen Quinn here in Australia in 1926. I am not sure of my G Grandfather's origin but his name was my father tells me was John William Considine. My father is also John William Considine (he is now 83) tells me that his Grand Father my Great Grandfather was either born on Long Island NY or migrated there. They had a farm on Long Island.... my G Father's sister's name was Margaret. I am presuming that my GGrandfather migrated to Australia during the Gold Rush........

Just to add a little more. Judging by the information you have supplied it is possible their may well be a connection. My Grandfather was born in 1892 is it possible that his Father was Daniel? and his Mother Margaret.....which would explain my Great Aunts name...... Margaret. Possibly stabbing in the dark but also possibly not...... the NY connection is really making me think. All roads in tracing our arrival in Australia have led to a dead end in Irland but as my GGrandfahter (according to my Father) originates by birth of otherwise from NY is really making me think that there may be somthing in this. The name Margaret could well be a stong pointer.

  • Hi S,

I made a quick check in Ancestry.com for your John William Considine in Nassau or Suffolk Co. NY (Long Island), but had no luck. In my family we did have a Jack Considine (with a sister named Margaret) but my Jack was born in 1909. And as far as I can tell, stayed in the US (Brooklyn NY). He also had siblings, George, Donald and Josephine. Ring any bells?
