Hello Ireland, I have found a possible Baptism Record for my paternal great-great grandmother Catherine Strong Riley via rootsireland website. I am trying to distinguish if this record could belong to Catherine. The name on the record is Catherine Strong, Date of Baptism 02-JUN-1822, Parish is Daingean County Co.Offaly. I do know her birthdate was 11-MAY-1822 and family records indicate Offaly as her birthplace. Family records do not indicate parents names. I only know she came to America at age 10 and was married in Watertown, NY in 1844. I know from 20th century Catholic doctrine the church would like to see a child baptized within a reasonble time frame say a month as I was in the early 1960's. I can assume this record is most likely the Catherine I am looking for. I am not sure how many familes named Strong existed in Daingean parish for May 1822. It appears to be not many. Would like a second opinion on my assumption from my Ireland friends who know Daingean history. Thank you very much

Dear Liz
Generally speaking, babies were baptised as close to the time of birth as possible, though there are always exceptions to every rule. For the most part, you can take it that a baptismal date is pretty close to the time of birth. It seems from the information you have provided, that there is every chance that the record you have found is that of ?your? Catherine. I had a look at the 1901 Census and there are not very many of the Strong name recorded in Offaly, so I think you are on the right track.
Best wishes

Hello Liz,
I had a thought as I was reading your post. If as you say that Catherine went to America at the age of 10 years, then she must have travelled with some adult. Have you searched www.castlegarden.org to find her in the passenger records? If you do find her, then take note of the date of arrival and the ship on which she travelled.
You can then look at the people of the same surname who also travelled on that date. It could possible lead you to a parent.
Just a suggestion,
Kind regards,
