Hi, I am searching for any information on the parents of my 2x greatgrandfather Stephen Bergin, born 26 Dec 1835 in Moneygall. I have found his baptismal record - his parents' names are Patt Bergin and Mary Trehy/Troy.

He had five siblings that I know of. I have found baptismal records for two of them - Mary Bergin b. 1842 and Ellen Bergin b. 1844 - that show the same parents. The baptismal record of an older sibling, James Bergin b. 1823, shows different parents - William Bergin and Johana Caroll. I cannot find a baptismal record for sibling Anna Bergin b.1833 or John Bergin b, 1824. Anna's obituary states she was born in Errill, Queens Co., but I cannot find her there either. And if she was born in Erill, it means her parents moved from Moneygall to Errill and back again as Mary and Ellen were born after her.

All of the siblings except Ellen emigrated to the U.S. James, John and Anna went in 1849. Stephen and Mary went in 1854.

I have searched Griffiths for Pat/Patrick Bergin in Offally and found one in 1851 in the right parish - Dunkarrin - but in a different townland - Clashagad. There are five in Queens (Laois) but none are in Errill.

I thought perhaps they left because their parents died, but there are so many Patrick Patt Bergins and Mary Bergin when I search even limiting to Kings or Queens I am overwhelmed, plus many of the records I see online don't have dates.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Nan, my name is Dolores Whyte from Dunkerrin Reaching Out Heritage Group.

I checked the Catholic Parish records (which by the way are all on line on moneygall.ie) and I have extracted the following information with regard to Stephen Bergin, your ancestor.

Stephen's parents Patrick Bergin and Mary Troy (sometimes referred to Trehy) were married in Dunkerrin Parish on  24th February 1835.  Their witnesses were John Bergin and Margaret Troy.     Their family were as follows

    (1) Stephen was baptised on 26th Dec 1835 in Dunkerrin Parish.  The address of Rathnavogue was given for this entry (Patrick Bergin and Mary Trehy given in the records.   The Sponsors were Ml Tuohy and Mary Ryan.

    (2) Austin Bergin was baptised in October 1839 (no date entered).  Rathnavogue given as the address, and sponsors were Dan Maher and Citty Trehy.

    (3)  Mary Trehy baptised on 15th Apr 1842, John Mullally and Anne Mullally were given as sponsors.

    (4) Ellen was baptised on 10th Nov 1844 Troy given as Mother's name)  Sponsors were Conor Mulally and Mary Mulally.    As you may be aware we only have the bapsitmal records in Ireland up to 1864, but it was custom to be baptised within 1 to 2 days after birth.

I cannot see any further baptismal entries under Dunkerrin Parish records.  Rathnavogue is a small townland in the Parish, and your ancestors may have moved from this area, as I tried locating a death certificate for Patrick and/or Mary Bergin on irishgenealogy.ie, but did not locate anyone living in Rathnavogue at time of death.   Irishgenealogy.ie is a free website giving births and deaths after about 1870's onwards.

Please contact me further if you require any further information, and also abotu the other names you mentioned in your query such as James/John and Anna,    Best regards

Thank you for all this research, Eammon! It's amazing. I have lots of new angles to think about now.

I found a marriage for Patt Bergin and Mary Troy in  Feb.1835 in Moneygall, Dunkerrin, Co. Offaly. This would match with Stephen's birthdate. Here is a link. I wish I could send as an attachment but I received an error message when I tried to upload a photo.  https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/61039/02479_01_0245/92306?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/3807614/person/25552280225/facts/citation/942122415327/edit/record.

So now I have 3 baptisms with the same parents - for Stephen, Mary, Ellen - and a marriage record for the parents. But James, John and Anna all have different parents. However, I note that one of the records you found for Anna lists Bergin/Fitzpatrick as the parents and I have found a Bergin/Fitzpatrick tree on Ancestry that I cannot yet connect to mine but I DNA match 7 of the descendents.

When you mention Dolores White above, do you mean I should write her a letter or does she have an email address?

Thanks a million for all your help, Eamonn!

  • Hi Dolores and Eamonn,

I am wondering if the five people I named above (James, John, Anna, Stephen, Mary) are a blended family. In the U.S. records and obituaries we have found, they are shown as siblings.

Turning to James, the oldest, are there any other children of his parents Wilm Bergin and Johana Carrol in the Dunkerrin records? Or a marriage record for Wilm and Johana? Or birth/death records for either parent?

In the US., on Stephen and Anna's  death records we see that the last name of Stephen and Anna's mother was given as Carroll, the same last name as on James' baptismal record.  Perhaps Wilm Bergin and Patt Bergin were brothers. Are there any census records for this period?

    Thank you,

    Nan

  • Hi Dolores,

I have searched the moneygall.ie/genealogy site but cannot find the records you mention above for the children of Patt Bergin and Mary Troy. I am searching on this page http://www.moneygall.ie/genealogy_type/births. Is there a different one I should use?

I would like to see if I can find a marriage record(s) for:

-the parents of James Bergin baptism 1823, Dunkerrin, whom Eamonn found. They are William Bergin and Johana Caroll.

-the parents of John Bergin baptism 1823, Clyduff, also found by Eammon. They are Bryan Bergin and Mary Gorman.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

    Regards,

    Nan
