Hi,

I am looking for info on my great grandparents, James J Hanbury and Bridget E Leonard. They both were born in Kings County (Offaly). James was born in 1860, He was baptized in Edenderry. His father was Joseph Hanbury or Hanberry, and his mother was Ann McJohn. His siblings were; Peter, born in 1859, Ellen, born in 1862, Mary, or, Maria, born in 1864, Edward W, born in 1868, and Joseph, born in 1871. James came to the USA in 1882 and settled in Brooklyn, NY. Edward came to the USA in 1888 and also settled in Brooklyn NY. I think Mary/Maria also came to USA. Not sure. I have found a good amount of information on both James and Edward after they came to the USA.

Bridget Leonard, was born in Kings County in 1857, she was baptized in Rhode/Rode in 1857. Her parents were George Leonard and Mary Ann Hogan. I believe Mary Ann died, and George remarried to Julia Horan/Horen. Bridget brothers and sisters from George and Julia Horan were; Wiliam, born in 1862, James, born in 1864, Christopher, born in 1866, Elizabeth, born in 1868, Thomas, born in 1871, and Mary Ann, born in 1876. Bridget came to the USA in 1880 and settled in Brooklyn NY. Her brother Thomas also came to the USA in 1877 and settled in Brooklyn NY.

I do not know if they knew each other in Ireland, but they found each other here, They were married in 1887, in Brooklyn, NY. I got their parent’s names from their marriage certificate.
If anyone has any more info, I would be so happy. And if I could find some cousins, that would be awesome!

Thanks in Advance

Sandy

  • Hi Sandy

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I could not locate a marriage record for Joseph and Ann but as you say the baptisms of their 6 children are listed.

    Peter: 01-Aug-1858

    James: 01-Jul-1860

    Ellen: 01-Jul-1862

    Mary: 01-Dec-1864

    Edward: 01-Feb-1868

    Joseph: 01-Jul-1871

The only baptism I could find for children of George and Mary was for Bridget, baptised in Rhode in Jan-1857. George and Anne married in Rhode in Nov 1855 but parents' names are not listed on the marriage for either - though you could check out the originals to be sure registers.nli.ie

I couldn't find a marriage for George and his second wife, Julia nor a death/burial record for Anne though there is one for a George Leonard in Edenderry in 1901. This George is listed as a Blacksmith and died on 19-Feb-1901. Could this be your George? Does his occupation ring a bell?

He was 83 when he died and a widower and that puts his year of birth as 1818. I tried to locate him in Slater's Directory without success but you could try Find My Past as they have a good listing of Commercial Directories to try. According to the death records, a Julia died on 02-Apr-1897 in Leitrim, Edenderry and is listed on the record as a Blacksmith's wife so this may be the right family. She was aged just 56 making her year of birth approximately 1841. Their children are listed as William, James and Christopher and her surname is recorded as 'Loran' though this is possibly a transcription error and again should be available on the original at the NLI site mentioned above.

I think this is Christopher listed here with his wife Mary and brother William. Chris was a Blacksmith too and his brother a Shepherd:

According to the 1911 Census he married in 1900:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Monasterori…

Their marriage (she was a Flynn) took place on 25-Apr-1900. Her father was listed as John and they married at Croghan Church.

Hope this fills in some gaps for you

    Best wishes

  • Hello Patty,

I knew eventually, someone would find my post. I am very glad to hear from you. It appears we are cousin, if we are talking about the same James and Bridget.. Very exciting, I only know my aunts on my mon's side of the family. Bridget and James' daughter Helen A Hanbury, is my great grandmother.

Did your mother call herself May,or Mae? Was her husband Francis Finnan? There were som many people with the same names, sometimes, it was hard be sure you had the right person. I have an ancestry.com page, where I have my info on my Irwin/Hanbury family.

Glad you contacted me. If you have questions, and, I can help, I would more than happy to anwser them.
