Hello,
I have identified one whom I believe to be my great great great grandfather, John Lally, in the Tithe Applotments in the 1820's, holding of Edward Coxe, near the town of Clara, County Offaly. Holdings were in Clara townland, in "Church Field" and "Beatty's Holding." My question is if there is any way of identifying exactly where these two places are or were. Thank you, any help is appreciated.

Hello Pat,
Perhaps you could try the Ordnance Survey Letters surveyors' field notes, commentaries and correspondence to the Ordnance Survey headquarters in Dublin. They were written between 1834 and 1841 and exist for twenty-nine counties, excluding Cork, Antrim, and Tyrone. The Letters' collection is commonly known as O'Donovan's Ordnance Survey Letters, after the historian, John O'Donovan (1806-1861), who led the project of information collection, notation and compilation. You can find them in the Tullamore Libary of on line.
Note. Church field may have been called (Glebe field/land).
Theo.

I tried Google Earth and Google Maps, to see whether they had either location marked, with no luck, However, the town of Clara has a local website with a lot of historical info. You could check it out and then contact them directly if the answer isn't easy to find there:
