Update on 12 Nov. 2012: I'm posting this here because I just found out from a distant cousin that at a reunion, he found a picture of my Gr Gf, Lawrence Daly with a note attached to it saying that Lawrence was from King's County! This is the first definitive information I've received. I also believe that Offaly is his county because just this week I found a death certificate for Francis Moran, and he's listed as being from King's County, also. Francis was the executor of James Daly's estate, and would have also been friends with my Lawrence.
My GrGf was Lawrence Daly. He immigrated to the USA ca. 1830. He was born ca. 1807-1813 in Offaly Ireland; died in US in 1905. He was in Ohio by 1843.
James Daly (ca. 1800/01-1843), whom I believe to be Lawrence's older brother, was in Ohio by 1833 and may have immigrated to USA around 1827-1830. James m. a woman from Vermont or Connecticut named Anna Marie UNKNOWN. He died in 1843, and Lawrence came to town to marry the widow Daly (his sister-in-law).
James and Lawrence had an older brother, John who immigrated with James. John was born ca. 1795.
James and wife had the following child: Rensellar (b. 1842) (re-named "James" by Lawrence). Lawrence and the widow Daly had: Francis (1847---?), Lawrence (1848-1903), and they adopted a son and called him William H. (1856-1930). In 1860, Anne Maria dies. William H. may have been born in Ireland to a DALY female, but his lineage is from a French Hugenot with the surname of LaFontaine.
Lawrence marrried my GrGm, Mary Anne Egan in Ohio, in 1863. She had settled in Chicago, Illinois, prior to meeting Lawrence. She was born in Ireland, 18 Aug 1835. Her father's name was Patrick; mother's name not known. She immigrated in 1851 due to the famine.
Lawrence and Mary Anne had the following children: Anne Marie (1863) and Mary Francis (twins), one of whom died, and they used the name Mary Francis (1866) for another girl. John Patrick (1869), James Franklin (1871), Timothy Aloysius and Thomas Alfred/Albert (twins b. 1873), and Bernard Joseph (1878).
Lawrence was a farmer his whole life in Ohio. Some of the sons were also. Although we used the name Francis quite a bit, I have found no Francis in the USA. There was a John Daly who travelled to Ohio prior to James, and he was born in Ireland ca. 1795-98. They lived together for a while 1833-1838 and then James moved when he married. John may have been the oldest brother of the 3, but I have no proof. John also died in 1843, just months prior to James' death. They were Catholic. All are buried in the USA.
In 1859 Michael Daly immigrated to the US. He was born ca. 1832-1835. He died in Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 1900. In 1870 he lived on land owned by Lawrence. I don't know how Michael and Lawrence were related. ( Michael married Catherine O'Rourke/Roark in 1861. She has come to US in 1860.). Catherine's parents are John O'Rourke/Roark and Anne Kenny or Kearny. She had a brother, Matin.
Michael and Catherine had the following children: John Edward (1864), Anna (1867), Mary (1868), Thomas (1869), Charles H. (1873), William (1876), Catherine I. (1878), Agnes (1882).
Thank you for any help you can provide. Best Regards,
Trish Daly

Hello Trish,
thank you for your message and I will try to help you locally where possible.
The bad news is that both Egan and Daly are very common names in Co. Offaly - I'm sure you know that already!
For example, there are over 535 Egans in Griffiths Valuation! If you search for Lawrence or James (perhaps the name of their father?), the number is reduced considerably. Perhaps cross-checking all the four names across the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths might narrow the search down to a couple of parishes but it's a long shot. With time, the graveyards of Co. Offaly will be digitised and this may provide some information in the future.
(Land Surverys: Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp and the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation.)
My suggestion would be that you contact the Offaly genealogy centre to see if there are any records at all - please let them know we sent you! The Irish Midlands (Counties Laois & Offaly) Ancestry service can be contacted here:
http://www.irishmidlandsancestry.com/content/contact/contact_details.htm
info@offalyhistory.com / Telephone + 353 (0)57 9321421.
Please note theirs is a chargeable service - there is a form on the website to complete and a first search costs ?10. Let's hope something turns up and then the local parish volunteers can take it from there.
Kind regards,

Dear Delores,
Thank you so much for your response! Yes, I've been at this a while, and know about the overwhelming occurences of DALY and EGAN throughout Ireland, especially Offaly and Cork! I have contacted the Midland Genealogical and Historical Society and received the answer that Lawrence is rather a "hopeless" case as he was born so early, and they were not able to find any records for him. I'm not sure that Mary Ann Egan came from Offaly as she was Lawrence's second wife, and had been in the USA from 1851. She didn't marry Lawrence until 1863. Lawrence lived in Ohio, while Mary Ann lived in Chicago, Illinois. They met at church in Illinois.
I had a Micheal/Mikel DALY who was born in the 1830s and immigrated in 1859. He moved onto land owned by Lawrence, but I'm not sure what their relationship was. I have commissioned research with the Society on him, and am awaiting an answer, which they said should take until March, 2013.
I just don't have a clear idea of Lawrence's father's name...perhaps James or Michael, so it's a little hard for me to look at the Tithe's book. I'm sincerely hoping that the Society finds something for me.
I promise to all, that I will post those results on this list, whatever they might be.
Best Regards,
Trish
P.S. I don't know if it will help, but there was a Francis Moran who was born in Offaly in 1807, and when he came to the USA, he settled near James Daly (my first immigrant, and Lawrence's brother). Francis was the executor of Jame's will. Perhaps there were Morans who lived around the Dalys. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for in the Tithe Applotment books, so if there's any way you could help me there...that would be wonderful.
Regards, Trish

Hi Trish
I have recently started to build may family trees and just found this site. The Lawrence Daly you describe is also my gr. gr gr grandfather. I have put together some bits of information from different sites and I am waiting to see what a Daly relative that I have contact with may have but haven't heard anything yet.
I had absolutely no idea where in Ireland Lawrence Daly was from and I appreciate all your hard work and hope you don't mind me using it.
You may have much of the USA information that I have. I found that he immigrated in 1830 at the age of 23. He died Feb 1, 1905 in Carlisle, Ohio. His father's name John Daly, born abt 1775 and his mother's name was Mary.
I found a marrige date with Maria A. Moran in 1845 but a son James (my gr gr grandfather) is listed as born in 1842 so the dates may be off in the documents (or they could be right). There is a son William that I found with a year of birth of 1857. Maria died in 1860 but I have not found anything much about her yet. There is some information that I found that she could have been born in Massachusetts or New York but you seem to have something different.
Lawrence married Mary Egan in 1863. I found children that I feel may be accurate - Anne, Mary, Frances John Patrick, Franklin, Thomas, TImothy and Joseph.
I think you were questioning Frank who would likely be Franklin. I found his date of birth to be June 6, 1871 born in Ohio and date of death as March 29, 1923 in Seattle Washington.
You mentioned that you had a photo of Lawrence Daly and I would love to have a copy if that were possible.
I have only been working on my ancestry for a few months so you likely have more information than I have. I know that there are relatives that I would like to have the opportunity to communicate with. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Cheryl

Well Hello Cheryl: I'd be happy to share information with you, but this site is for connecting to Ireland. I haven't "proven" where Lawrence came from, so I'm posting clues at this point. Please write to me at dalytoo@sbcglobal.net and we can share USA info there. Please let me know exactly how you are related via your family lineage, and we can chat and exchange information. I look forward to hearing what you find out from your Irish relatives. You are a lot closer than me if you have contacts in Ireland. Regards, Trish
