Ann Nolan was born in Kings County between 1824-1833, (source: UK census). She married James Tyrell, born 1821 Ireland. Two of their daughters were born in Kings County: CATHERINE TYRELL 1844, MARY ANN TYRELL 1845 (source: Liverpool Catholic Baptism record, listed as god parents).

The family left Ireland for Liverpool around 1845- 1846 (daughter Elizabeth Baptised February 1846 Liverpool). The family were Roman Catholic.

I have searched for the marriage of Ann & James & the Baptisms of Catherine & Mary Ann using Ancestry, Family Search & Find My Past without success.  Is this because the Kings County/Offaly Catholic records are not all online? If so where else can I look?

I am coming to Ireland in October 2014, first stop Dublin. I would love to be able to visit my ancestors birthplace, but seem to have hit a brickwall at the moment.

Many thanks

  • One explanation could be that the records for the parish your couple came from don?t go back far enough. Not all parishes have records for the 1840s and earlier. You can see what RC records survive, and where copies are kept, using this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/

Not every parish?s records are on-line either. Spelling may also be an issue. You may need to try various permutations of the names to find the records.

I have a reference book which shows by parish how far back church records go. Co. Offaly parishes in general go back to the early 1800s. I checked Roots Ireland for the baptisms with no success. I also checked for a marriage record for James and Ann not only in Offaly but in all of Ireland with no success.

I checked the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tyrells and there was only one listed. I know James had left but I was trying to see where the name was listed. The one Tyrell was Hugh Tyrell who lived in the town of Edenderry which is Monasteroris civil parish.

Now getting back to Roots. Not all Offaly RC parishes are included in Roots. Monasteroris (Edenderry RC parish) is included. My assumption is that one of the parishes not included is where James and Ann were married and the baptisms occurred. When I get some time, I will try to determine which parishes are not in Roots and let you know.

  • Clare:

There are four different Catholic dioceses that have parishes in Co. Offaly which complicates researching. I matched up the Catholic parishes included in Roots against the Catholic parishes mentioned in the reference book I have. The book is " A Guide to Irish Parish Registers" by Brian Mitchell and it covers all denominations not just RC.

In any event, I identified seven RC parishes that were not covered in Roots for Co. Offaly and it is possible that your Tyrell family worshipped in one of these parishes. Below I listed the parish and the year records are available. One nuance about the starting year. In some cases, the year shown may be for baptisms only or marriages only and the other group may begin 20 years later. The book does not highlight this fact. I just know this from reviewing other sources. One other nuance that I just noticed. Co. Offaly borders seven other counties and it is possible that some of these parishes have their records in Roots under a different county. (see Roscrea and Galbally).

Let me know if you have questions. If not, enjoy your trip in October.

  • Thank you so much for your help Roger, your have narrowed down my search nicely! A very useful book you have there.

I have pencilled in Edenderry for a visit. I will concentrate on the Parishes you have given me & see what I come up with.

  • Many thanks for your suggestion re spelling. There is one result for Anne Nowlan Baptism in Count Offaly on Roots Ireland, as opposed to Ann Nolan, so I will purchase this in the hope that it will 'shed some light'!

  • Hi Anne

Thanks for finding that for me. I purchased the record from Roots Ireland, but unfortunately Catherine's mother was listed as B Lalley, not Ann Nolan. Never mind,  it was worth a try. Back to the drawing board!
