A baptism record I purchased from the IFHF shows the following:

Name: Barth Pack    Gender: Male
Father: Barth Pack
Mother: J. Patterson

Date of Baptism: 01-Dec-1884
Parish/District: Kilcormac
County: Co. Offaly
Denomination: Roman Catholic

I'm looking for any other record of these people.

When I was in Ireland, I was repeatedly told that "Pack" is not an Irish name, and, in various places where my Pack family had lived, "No one with that name ever lived here."

It is obviously a rare name in Ireland. Is this the baptism of a Pack, or a transcription error?

Thanks,

Peggy

  • Peggy,

it's a pretty rare name but there are some others listed in other counties:

    • there are 16 Pack's listed in the Land Surverys: Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) here - a number called Barther or Barthw (maybe short for Bartholomew?) but none in Co. Offaly or King's County.
    • And there are also some in the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) here.
    • See also pack households in mid-19th century Ireland

  • Thanks, Delores & Jack.

My Packs (or those known to be mine) mostly start out in Kilkenny. A number of them were C of I clergymen.

There is a Pack on Griffiths --- in Portumna, Galway --- who probably isn't getting counted. My gr-gr-grandfather's entry was mistranscribed as "Bartholomew Park."

I'm really puzzled about Ellen Braddell Pack in 1879. I have an Ellen Braddell (alias McCheane) Pack who married  Samuel Tench in 1855. Surely there can't have been 2 Ellen Braddell Packs?

I ordered this record because I knew of no Bartholomew (I'm also guessing that that is the name) Pack in Ireland in 1884. I know of only 3 by that name --- my G-GF, GG-GF, and GGG-GF. Assuming that the transcription is correct, I wonder if the father might be a British soldier stationed in Ireland? (Lots of Packs in England.)  Were there troops in that vicinity in 1884?

Btw, shouldn't the birth record show up in the civil registrations?
