I am looking details of the Irish origins of my great-great grandfather James J. Condron. I have also seen it spelled Condren.  He was born, according to his gravestone in Connecticut, in King's County Ireland.  The 1870 U.S. Census for Hartford, CT says he was thirty so I assume his birth year was 1840 give or take a year. I don't know when he came to the U.S. but he enlisted in the U.S. Civil war as a soldier in 1861 (compiled service record says aged 21 which also supports his birth year as 1840).  His Army service record says he was born in "Seven Churches, Ireland".  I don't know what parish of Offaly that would be.

James married Mary Eloise Campbell.  I don't know when or where.  She was also Irish but I don't know where specifically she came from.  James died at age 38 of pneumonia in Hartford, CT on 4 May 1878.  He was Catholic.

Their children were, I believe:

(all born in Connecticut, USA)

James F.  b. abt. 1871, d. 23 July 1884 age 13

Mary b. March 1872  d. March 1948  never married

Rose O. b. 1874   d. 28 Aug. 1889 age 15

Anne J. b. Sept. 1874 d. Nov. 1939, married James T. O'Day

Margaret E. b. Oct. 1876, d. March 1862, never married

Elizabeth b. 1 Oct. 1877, d. 25 Oct. 1960, married Michael Henry Flynn

Years ago I had correspondence with a man in the Hartford area who had a James Condren in his family tree.  The parents of that James were James Condren and Ann Kilmartin.  I'd love to confirm if this is the family of MY James Condron or not.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Seven Churches would likely be the area around Clonmacnoise civil parish. I looked at the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clonmacnoise parish and there were 3 Condrons listed all in Clonfinlough townland (see below). The oldest son (and only son) of James and Mary Eloise was James. If they followed the normal naming patterns, the grandfather in Ireland would be James. Note there is a James in Clonfinlough.

I also checked the 1901 census and there were three Condron families in Clonfinlough including the Kieran in the Griffiths. (see below)

  • Thank you Roger!  The naming pattern seems helpful in one regard but the repetition sure makes things hard to sort out.  I appreciate your help on this journey.

  • Marnie, A good place to check for this branch of the family is Ancestry. go to the database for Historical Newspapers, birth, marriages and death announcements, 1851 -2003. I found many relatives there.

Roger, These Condrons came from the townland of Clinfinlough, (parish of ) Clonmacnois, (PLU of) Parsonstown, (county of) Offaly. Earlier the county was Kings. The Seven Churches refers to the churches near the cathedral of Clonmacnois. Google those words for more info

  • Hi Joan,  I just wanted to touch base.  I haven't really gotten any further with this but am trying to restart my research.  Are we thinking this family that Roger identified in Clonfinlough is likely my Condren/Condron family?  Have you done DNA testing?
