Looking for information on Martin Madden of Offlay. Date of birth between 1800-1821, immigrated on the Ship Mariner from Liverpool to Boston Mass. A military record we believe is him shows that he served the 5th foot regiment, was discharged at age 22, covered dates 1838-1843. It shows on that his town as Eagley. He married Margaret Winn (Wynne) but have no idea where. Their first two children Anne & Catherine were born in Ireland (1828-1830) but we do not know where. Any information on Martin's birth place and date and perhaps a marriage record of Martin and Margaret would be wonderful. Thank you for any assistance you may have.

  • Good Morning

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

Does Martin's military record refer to a place of birth in Ireland or is Eagley a UK/Liverpool placename? As you can see from the link below, there is a Civil Parish of Eglish in Co. Ofally:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=1995&civilparish=Eglish&citycounty=Offaly

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Eglish and Drumcullen begin in 1809. There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Some other websites that may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ - you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too

  • JUST found this site somehow... was searching for my Maddens in Offaly - so, my3sons, where did you find the Mariner ship info and military record? I have Martin being born about 1800, married Margaret Wynne Oct 24, 1829 at Gallen/Reynagh parish. I haven't been able to find Ann or Catherine's baptisms yet, but I know their daughter  Bridget (my 3x gg) was baptized at St. Michael in June 1838 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. They moved to New York for a few years, I assume to avoid the rebellion, before moving back to Tyendinaga near Belleville. So he must have come between 1829 and 1838. Was it a New York military record? Are you on Ancestry/AncestryDNA?

    Thanks!

    Mike

  • I had received an entire booklet from my father in law (John Daniel Madden) from an aunt who had done extensive research on Martin Madden & family. In the booklet was information that he immigrated on the Ship Mariner to Boston. I eventually found the attached document.

This is my husband's family, he descends from Robert Dennis Madden, son of John L. Madden & Margaret Moore. John L. Madden is the second son of Martin & Margaret Madden, 5th child of 9. His siblings include Anne, Catherine, Bridget, Patrick, James, Michael, Margaret & Rose.

After Martin's death in Hastings, Northhumberland Ontario Canada, Margaret took the family to Jonesfield Twp, Saginaw County MI
