Martin Swift was born 12 Nov 1828 in Ballylee, Co. Galway, son of Thomas Swift and Mary Connell. He emigrated to America in 1848 with his sister, Bridget Swift (1829-1920).
Martin also had a brother, John, and another sister, Mary Anna.
Martin married 21 Jan 1856 in Albany, New York to Mary Gavin (1830-1896). They had eight children: Abigail (1856-1931), James (1857-1939), Mary Ellen (1861-1946), Martin Jr. (1861-1946), John Thomas (Brigham) (1863-1927), Alvah Bartholomew (Abe) (1865-1936), Francis (1867-1930), and Florence Jane (Jennie) (1869-1956).
Martin and Mary lived for a short time in New York (from 1848 to 1864) and then moved to Oneida (Knox Co.) Illinois, where he lived until 1871 and then moved to Washington (Washington Co.) Iowa. After the death of his first wife, Mary Gavin, Martin Swift remarried to Mary Jane Boyd (1868-1961). They had one son, Richard Bernard Swift (1897-1959.)
Martin Swift died 6 January 1907 in Washington, IA.
