Bridget O’Neill
Bridget Niel was baptized 30 October 1812 at Thomastown church, Kilkenny. Her parents were James Niel and Margaret Ring. Edmund Gaul and Bridget Riley/Reilly were listed as the sponsors.
Her parents James Niel/Naile/Neile/Nail/Neil married Margaret Ring of Smithtown, on 25 July 1799. There were four witnesses to their wedding William Cahil, Edmd. Bray, ?Reilly and Mary Reilly.

At some point Bridget emigrated to Canada and the first official document for her is her marriage record. Bridget Niel, now recorded as O’Neill was married 11 June 1844 at Holy Name of Mary Church, Marysville, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. Bridget married George Howson (1820-1856). George had been born in Oxfordshire or Berkshire England.
Her husband George Howson died in 1856 and left Bridget O’Neill Howson, a widow with 3 daughters. Bridget worked as a Huckster in Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. Bridget died in Belleville, on 23 June 1884 and she was buried at St. Michael’s The Archangel Cemetery in Belleville.
A short obituary in the Belleville Intelligencer Newspaper appeared in the 24 June 1884 edition:
“An old and well known resident of Belleville passed away yesterday in the person of Mrs. Bridget Houston (sic) who died from effects of a paralytic stroke at the age of 70. Mrs. Houston (sic) had for 45 years carried on business on a huckster on the market and was favorably known to several generation of Bellevillians. She was a “character” in her way, and will be missed by many, especially the older residents of the city.”
