Portumna Courthouse collapsed shorty after the conclusion of the business of the Quarter Sessions, which had been conducted by County Judge Henn QC. It was found that the roof and ceiling had fallen in, and the body of the court was covered with debris to the depth of about seven feet. The four walls are in tact being built of solid masonry but the rest of the building is a wreck. It is thought that the cause of the collapse is the recent heavy rain, which probably contracted the joists to which the laths of the ceiling were nailed. The building was of ample proportions and internal arrangements considered superior to those generally found.
