The leader of the West Waterford IRA flying column heard British troops were on a train going from Dungarvan to Waterford. They fired on the train as it passed Ballyvoile, then stopped the train at the level crossing at Ballylinch. Heavy fire between the ambush party and the British soldiers on the train ensued. No one was killed or captured, but the civilians on board were terrified and one IRA fighter and one British soldier were injured.
