Henry John Cambie 1836
Back to ListHenry J Cambie was born 25 Oct 1836 in Castletown Kilbarron Nenagh, Co Tipperary, the son of Charles Cambie and Jane Disney.
He was educated in England and qualified as a Civil Engineer.
The family left Coolbawn in 1851 for Canada. He began work on the Grand Trunk Pacific railway and seven years later joined the Canadian Pacific Railway. He later became chief surveyor and planned the route of the famous railway line right across Canada, coast to coast.
He settled in Vancouver and was involved in the construction of Christ Church Cathedral there.
He retired in 1921 and died in Vancouver in 1928 where a street is named in his honour.
