George Aitkin was the Land Steward of Coorheen House, the Dowager House of the Earls of Clancarty, in Loughrea Co. Galway. The 1901 census of Ireland states that he was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland. It also tells us that he was 53 at the time of the census which places his birth around 1848. A member of the Church of Ireland, George married Emily Condell Taylor, the daughter of James Taylor, a school teacher, on May 18th 1897. The marriage cert tells us that George's father was also a Land Steward. They had five children,

It seems likely that Maria Margaret was named after her paternal grandmother, Margaret Aitkin, who died the year before Maria Margaret was born. George, who was present at her death, recorded her having died at Ballydugan, between Loughrea and Portumna.
George is listed on the Dowager Countess of Clancarty, Sarah Juliana Le Poer Trench's death cert as having been present at her death in 1905.
The Aitkin family are not listed in the 1911 census, and there are no marriage or death certs for the family in Ireland after this, so it is possible that they relocated after Coorheen House became property of the Diocese of Clonfert who converted it into the Bishop's Palace for the diocese.
