I have a death record from the Glanamaddy Workhouse that shows what could be my 2x great grandfather, Matthias Kearns. The date of death, Oct 1896 and age, 63, fits with what I know. The family was from Williamstown, Curralough, Templetogher which is vey close to Glenamaddy.
The following information was provided by Mr Steve Dolan, Manager of The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, Co. Galway
The Glenamaddy Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1850. The Workhouse was opened in 1853 at a cost of £6,245. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates, but census records show that the population of the Workhouse never came cloes to this number, with the highest number on record being 147 inmates in 1881. This is not a reflection of Glenamaddy's affluence, but instead a matter of the Workhouse coming too late, as the worst years of the famine had passed by the time the Workhouse opened. The Glenamaddy Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ballinastack, Ballymoe, Ballynakill, Boyounagh, Carrownagur, Clonkeen, Creggs, Curraghmore, Glenamaddy, Kilcornan, Kiltullagh, Raheen, Scregg, Shankill, Templetogher, Toberdosh, and Toberroe.
The Workhouse was taken over in 1900 by the Bon Secours nuns, and in 1921 the main building was burned down by Republican activists.
