The following information was provided by Mr Steve Dolan, Manager of The Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, Co. Galway
The Roscommon Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1843 at a cost of £8,988. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 900 inmates, but census records show that the true number of inmates reached as high as 2,730 in 1849. The Roscommon Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Athleague, Clonfinlough, Cloontuskert, Cloonygormican, Elphin, Kilbride, Kilgefin, Killukin, Kilteevan, Kiltrustan, Knockcroghery, Lissonuffy, Roscommon, Strokestown, and Tulsk in Co. Roscommon and Dunamon and Kilbegnet in Co. Galway.
The Roscommon Workhouse is now the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Re: the CO...Killukin area of Roscommon...are there lists of names of workhouse inmates available? I'm looking for the name of George Farrell or any Farrell name associated with the area of Killukin, Croghan, Lisadaly townland. Thank you in advance for any advice.

I am interested in finding out bout Festus (Festy) Flynn from Glinsk/Kilbegnet born 1841. If one and the same as the Fesus Flynn who is recorded as drying in Roscommon Workhouse c 1865 I would like to hear from anyone who can throw light on his origins. If part of my Flynn ancestry, he would have been the child of James Flynn (a Tailor) and his first wife Mary (Maria) nee Conway, who I believe died giving birth to him in Kilbegnet in 1841. There is an age discrepance of the Festus who died as being c 21, whereas my Festus would have been c 24, but that may just be down to the Workhouse not knowing his true dob. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
