Hannah (Johanna) O'Connor 1863

Back to List

I'm hoping to find some information about my great-grandmother Hannah (or Johanna) Hickey O'Connor, born in 1863 or 1864 in County Kerry, d. 3 March 1933 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  She emigrated to Canada in 1882; the family story, which is probably true, is that she had met my great-grandfather James O'Keeffe when he was a member of the Irish Royal Constabulary stationed in Kerry, and they decided to elope.  They married in Montreal on 9 April 1883.

In their marriage record, Hannah lists her parents as Thomas O'Connor, trader, and Hannah Hickey of County Kerry.  The 1901 census for Ireland includes a Thomas J. O'Connor, general merchant, age 59, and his wife Hannah, 60, in Knocknagashel, Co. Kerry, along with three daughters.  It seems likely that these are my great-great grandparents, but I'm hoping that someone can confirm this information.

The photo I've used here shows Hannah in 1885.  The infant she's holding is my grandfather, the second of the six children she would have.

Thanks in advance for any leads that you might have!

  • Thanks for sharing this fascinating story! I happened to notice in the 1901 census that a boarder with the O'Connor family has the surname O'Keefe (the same as Hannah's husband). It could be coincidence...but it is possible that he is related to James O'Keefe (Hannah's husband)...?

  • Thanks in turn for this interesting comment.  It is indeed a possibility that the boarder, Arthur O'Keefe, could be a cousin or other relative of James O'Keefe.  I'll see if I can find out.

  • Hi Laura,

While researching my O'Connor family around the Abbeyfeale, Knocknagoshel and Brosna area, I came across a Thomas J. O'Connor (c.1840 - 1903) - Farmer/Postmaster/Shopkeeper - and his wife Johanna Hickey O'Connor (c.1839 - 1934), Knocknagoshel town. Although not related to my side, I have made contact with a great grandaughter of John O'Connor who was a brother to this Thomas J. O'Connor.

If you are willing to chat and see if we have a connection with Thomas J. O'Connor, I would be delighted to hear from you.
