In the mid-1800s, over 4,000 young orphaned women were sent from Ireland to Australia by way of the Earl Grey Scheme. Much good work has been done in recent years to reconnect the descendants of these girls with their roots in Ireland.
Of them, 137 girls were sent from Mayo. Barbara Barclay has taken an interest in the girls who left Mayo and here sheds some light on their experiences and how we might help to reconnect their descendants to County Mayo:
