Herbert Francis Shaw was born in 1901 to Mary Francis Gormley (b. 1868) and Christopher Shaw.
His mother was from Fermoy, Co. Cork but she had moved to New York with her husband.
Herbert was one of four children, but he was the only one to survive into adulthood.
His father died in Philadelphia in 1904.
Herbert moved around quite a bit. From his early years spent in the United States, Herbert and his mother moved to Liverpool where they lived from 1904 until 1910. The 1911 Irish census shows that Herbert and his mother returned to Ireland that year to live in her ancestral home of Fermoy where both his grandfather and his uncle were employed as Master of the Fermoy Union Workhouse. He stayed in Fermoy until 1921. In 1924 Herbert applied for a U.S. passport. His application lists his address as Westbury, Long Island, New York.
In 1931 Herbert married Margaret Agnes Ahern (1903-1945) in Cork city.
During World War II, Herbert served in the U.S. military.
Herbert was widowed in 1945 and he himself died in 1980.
