MICHAEL GAUGHARTY (also Gaugherty, Garighorty, Gerity, etc) was born in Temple Michael, Longford about 1811 (1871 Census Ancestry.com). In 1827 in Athlone, Co.Westmeath he joined Joined 27th Reg. of Foot. Name spelt Gaugharty or Gaugherty on Service Records. 1828 transferred to 3rd Dragoon Guards (I have his service records). 20 December 1940 married SARA SCOTHERON (Scawthorn) in Rotherham, Sth Yorkshire. His father is named as MICHAEL GARIGORTY. In 1841 he was a Private in the Army stationed at Loughborough Barracks, Leicestershire, In 1854 he was discharged at Longford and in 1861 was living in Bristol as a Chelsea Pensioner/Porter. Michael died in Bristol in 1874 (England & Wales Civil Registration Death Index,1837-1915.)
Michael & Sarah had 4 daughters - In 1841 MARY SCOTHRON GAUGHARTY was born in Sheffield, York. She possibly married PATRICK O'DONNELL in Boston Mass in 1871. It was his 2nd marriage. In 1845 2nd daughter MARGARET born in Cork when Michael was posted in Ireland 1843-46. In 1868 she married CRISTOPHER BYRNE, born in Ireland in 1840 who had been a soldier. They had 3 daughters & 2 sons all born in Bristol. 3rd daughter SARAH HANNAH born 1849 Sheffield Yorks married JAMES HENRY WITHERS in 1870 in Bristol (They are my great grandparents). they had 5 sons. 4th daughter CATHERINE (KATE) was born 1854 in Bristol.
