Bridget came from according to her marriage certificate a place called Yokalshan in Tipperary. She was born about 1858. She married Matthew O'Connor from Island, Galway in Waimate, South Island, New Zealand on 11 January 1886. They had three girls. Mary, Catherine and Kitty. She died on 3 May 1893 in Waratah, Tasmania. Her father was Thomas Hogan and mother was Margaret Hogan according to MC. They came over to Victoria and lived in Kilmore.

could you post a close up version of the attached photo so that people maybe able to assist you identify where Bridget was from. There is no place called Yokalshan in Tipperary that I am aware of.
There are no births for a Bridget parents Thomas and Margaret for 1857.
Between 1847 and 1867 there is only one Bridget registered to parents of that name- Bridget baptised in Templederry in 1862

Who is your GG? Is it Timothy, Bridget's brother who was the witness to the wedding? I have tried to find Yokalshan but it could be just their accent and could be Youghal Arra. No record found there too.

My GG was Martin Hogan who emigrated to Waimati NZ in 1878, He sailed from Plymouth on the Waikato arriving on the 1st Nov 1878.
His father was William Hogan from Burgessbeg county Tipperary.

I have emailed the Wiamate Museum to find out if there is any info on Bridget and Timothy in the area. Maybe Martin was another brother.B8ut then again Hogan from Tipperary is like Jones from Wales! Do you have shipping records? Where from?

I have the passanger list from the sailing of the Waikato which sailed on the 1st Nov 1878 from Plymouth and reached Lyttleton on the 18th Jan 1879. there was only one Hogan on board my GG.

What did Martin do when he reached Waimate? Was he just a labourer on a farm?
No he purchased two 10 acre blocks in Porridge Gully just north east of the town. He grew strawberry's and other fruit there. There is a small booklet called remembering porridge gully in the Waimate council building.
Martin & Mary are both buried in the old catholic part of Waimate cemetery.
