Born Abt. 1828 in Ireland (possibly Fermanagh?)
Arrival to US in 1849 to Calais, Maine, maybe coming across the border from New Brunswick where his family resided for a time

Filed "first papers" - declaration of intention to naturalize as a citizen of the US, on 14 Oct 1851 in Stillwater, Washington County, Minnesota, USA

Died (presumed drowned) 03 Mar 1863 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA

Married Tryphena Brimhall, 05 Sep 1853 in St Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA
Siblings:
George (b. abt. 1812)
Charles (b. abt. 1821)
William (b. abt. 1833)
Mary (b. abt. 1834)
Anna (b. abt. 1834)
Lucinda (b. abt. 1835)

This is a really interesting family. I just have a suggestion from records that they were from or lived in Co. Fermanagh. Protestant family. Resided in New Brunswick, Canada for a time. I believe they were there by 1844 (birth of youngest child among the siblings; one brother married in June 1846 in NB). William by his own account was born "on the ocean" as his father was an officer in the British Navy. I find absolutely no record confirming that. Family seemed to decide to change the spelling of their name from Coulter to Colter in the 1840s in MN. They were among the first settlers in St. Paul, MN and two are recorded in the first territorial census in 1849.
