John O'Neill was born in Garvaghullion in a place called Derryhooagh in May 1822. John was the son of James O'Neill and Mary O'Kane. He immigrated to the United States about 1846 and settled in Chicago, Illinois before 1850. John is considered to be a pioneer of the city of Chicago, where he was a brewer. John married Ann McGillen from Devenish Parish, County Fermanagh, on 1 Jan 1850. John and Ann had 6 children: James, Mary Anne, Alice, Margaret, Elizabeth and John. After Ann's death in 1861, John married Mary White. They had a daughter, Sarah Anne.
