    BIOGRAPHY

    James Morrison Mark is listed as a ship plumber.

    Image July 1918. “The old gentleman on the left is your Great Grandfather Mark, my mother's father. He was a large and handsome Irishman from Donaghadee on the coast outside of Belfast.”[1] In fact, he was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, of Irish parents.[2]

    Siblings James had six siblings: William John, b. 1856, Robert M. (Morrison?), b. 1858, Sarah Jane, b. 1863, married Alexander Janson, Ann/Annie, b. 1965, Jemima, b. 1868, Thomas, b. 1873. These siblings have not been researched.

    Birth, and 1861 Census In actual fact, it was James’ parents, William Mark, 32, a blacksmith, and Jemima Morrison, 29, who were born in Ireland (County Down). He was born in Glasgow, Tradeston RD, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 9 October 1860. However, the 1861 census lists James as being born in 1861 and his age at 0. Along with his parents, two older brothers are also present: William John, 5, and Robert M., 3. Their address is Cavendish Street, Glasgow, Govan (Parish), Tradeston (RD), Lanarkshire. According to the census, at least four other families also lived at that address.[3] [4]

    1871 Census In 1871, the Marks have 5 children and a visitor from Ireland, Thomas Mark, 25 (born 1846), an unmarried male who is listed as a blacksmith. Their address is now listed as 13 Cavendish Street, Glasgow, Govan, Tradeston (RD). William and Jemima are now 42 and 40, and the children are Robert M., 12, James M., 10, Sarah Jane, 8, Ann, 6, and Jemima, 3.[5]

    1881 Census The Mark’s address is now 109 Henderson Street, Glasgow, Govan Parish, Kinning Park RD. William and Jemima are now 52 and 50, and William is now an engineer in public works. Unmarried males Robert, 23, an engine fitter, and James, 20, a salesman in a cloth warehouse, are still at home. Sarah and Annie, 20 and 18, are now machinists and are also at home. Jemima, 13, and new son Thomas, 8, are scholars.[6]

    1883: Marriage to Isabella Gibbon James Morrison Mark married Isabella Gibbon on 30 August 1883 at St. John Evangilist, Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England. Both fathers, William Mark and James Gibbon, were present. Details are not available on how James ended up in England. James was 23 and Isabella, 22.[7]

    1885-1896, Births of five children Three children were born to James and isabella between 1995 and 1890: William in 1885 in Glasgow, Helen in 1886 in England, and James in 1890 in Glasgow. Jemima followed in 1893 and Isabella in 1896, both born in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire.

    1891 Census James and isabella have returned to the Glasgow area and are now living at 5 Alexander Street, 3rd floor, Clydebank, Old Kilpatrick Parish and RD, County Dunbartonshire. James and Isabella are now both 30, and James is a plumber. William is 6, Helen is 5 and James is 1.[8]

    1901 Census James and Isabella are now living at 28 Alexander Street, Clydebank, Old Kilpatrick Parish and RD, County Dunbartonshire. William is 16 and an apprentice joiner and Helen is 15 and a sewing machine shaft parts inspector. James is 11, Jemima, 8, and Isabella, 5, are scholars.[9]

    1911 Census In 1911, James and Isabella are both 50 and are living at 63 Kilbowie Road, Clydebank. James is now a plumber in the shipbuilding industry. Son James is not present, but the other four unmarried children are still at home: William, 26, is a joiner in the shipbuilding industry; Helen, 25, and Jemima, 18, are clerkesses at a drapers business; Isabella is 15, with no occupation listed.[10]

    Death James Morrison Mark, 79, plumber, died on 25 July 1940 (4h 40m PM) of carcinoma of the gall bladder. His address was 411 Glasgow Road, Clydebank. Son William Mark signed the death certificate.[11]
