Michael was one of ten children born to James Gibbons and Bridget Staunton. He was a twin; his sister was Catherine Gibbons Fahey. Michael arrived in the US on 24 April 1922 aboard the Celtic and moved to Chicago where he got a job with the Chicago Transit Authority. He married Annie Mary Hyde of Prospect Hall, Clashmore, Youghal, Co. Waterford and they had five children and sixteen grandchildren.
