Searching for birth and death date for Margaret Rourke/Rorke.  I believe she was born about 1799 in Kings County, Ireland, but have no idea who her parents were.  She married Timothy Farrell on 20 January 1820 in Dunkerrin, Kings County, Ireland.  Together they had the following children, all born in Kings County:  John, Patrick, Michael, James and Hanna.

There was some idea that Timothy migrated to Canada, but I found a death certificate for him in Killura, County Cork, Ireland.  However, his son, Patrick, did migrate to Ontario, Canada and James went to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Any help on this line would be appreciate.

    Hi Julie,

I'm not sure if my ancestors are part of the same family as yours but the names are certainly similar. I don't have a lot of information about them as yet - only the following - My 2nd great grandmother, Mary Rorke (Rourke?), was baptised in Clonfert, Lusmagh in March 1841. Her parents were Michael Rorke and Mary Murray. The sponsors were John and Catherine Rorke. In August 1864, Mary Rorke married Richard Farrell in Stockport, Cheshire, England. According to the marriage certificate, Richard's father was John Farrell and Mary's father is confirmed as Michael Rorke. This family lived in Yorkshire, England for a while but finally settled in Salford, Lancashire, England. So far I have not found out any earlier information about the families. If you think it is the same family you are searching, I would be very interested to hear from you.

  • Hi, glad to hear from you.  Since posting my original message, I have been able to uncover more informaton on Margaret Rourke/Rorke.  She was born 28 May 1800 in King's County, Ireland (now Offaly).  Her parents were John Rourke/Rorke and Catherine Callaghan Rourke/Rorke.  Since your Mary Rorke was born in 1841, I doubt that she was the sister of my Margaret.  But John and Catherine Rourke/Rorke could possibly be the sponsors in her baptism.

Margaret did have a son name John Michael Farrell born in 1820, and another son named Michael P. Farrell born in 1824.  They were both born in King's County also.  I don't know John's date of death, but Michael P. Farrell died 15 Jan 1904 in Hastings, Ontario, Canada.  No info on wife or children.

Thank you for responding.  If you should be able to connect our two families, I would love to hear from you again.  BTW, where are you from/living now?

  • It was great that you responded so quickly Julie! I only actually came across the Irelandxo site yesterday and saw your post. It's hard to say if these Rorkes are the same family as it seems to be a common name - but it's very likely they were related distantly. I'm finding it very hard to verify any of my Irish ancestors as it all has to be done online and you can never be sure that you've got the right person if you find a baptism record, etc - especially as I am not even sure where half of them are from apart from general Irish counties. I have a DNA cousin who I started to correspond with when we realised that we had the same Irish great great grandparents in our Ancestry family trees (Mary Rorke & Richard Farrell). She is working on the tree too so if we come up with any more information I will certainly let you know. In her tree, she has Michael Rorke born about 1812 in Ireland but no actual county or town name. He married Mary Murray, born in 1813. They had a Margaret Rorke born in 1840 in Kings County and my great great grandmother, Mary Rorke, was her sister. All of the siblings seemed to end up in Lancashire, England although it seems that Margaret might have moved to the United States. As I say, we can't be sure these people are even the same immediate Rorke family. My cousin still lives in Lancashire, England. I was born there but now live in New Zealand. Look forward to being back in touch with more positive news! Best wishes!

  • Hi, Chris and Happy New Year! So glad to hear from you! I know I have a bit more info to share, but not at home where my computer is. I will get back yo you ASAP. Please tell me what you know about Michael Farrell. The name Bridget Conway sounds very familiar. Did she and Michael marry/live/die in New Orleans, LA? I also know that Patrick went to Canada and their sister, Hanna, went to Australia. Where are you from/living? I am native New Orleanian, living in a suburb of NOLA. I hope to hear from you shortly. As soon as I get home, I will check on my Farrells and get back yo you. Thanks again! Julie Campbell Hernandez
