Hi, am seeking information in regard to my gg grandparents Martin PURCELL and Catherine PURCELL (this was her maiden name as well).  They were born in Firoda, Castlecomer, Kilkenny.  Their daughter Mary - my great grandmother - came to Australia with her sister Julia - to Queensland.  Another sister Catherine - Kate - also came to Australia - after she had married and already had two children.  They settled in Queensland as did Mary.  Julia married in Queensland but went to live in New South Wales.  Am seeing information in regard to all and any of them.  My great grandmother Mary married James Lewis who was born in Shinrone to James Lewis and Mary White - of whom I know virtually nothing.  I do have a lot of information in regard to the Purcell family here in Queensland so would love to hear from anyone who has information or any relatives.  Thank you.

  • Hello

My name is Dolores Whyte from Dunkerrin Reaching Out, Dunkerrin is a small village near the village of Shinrone.

I have been looking at your ancestors

    James Lewis and Mary White.

I looked up Roots Ireland and I found the following children born to James Luis and Mary White (spelling as on Roots Ireland)

    • Joseph Luis address given as Derrinclare.  Joseph was baptised on 31 May 1857 in Shinrone Parish.  His godparents were Dan Luis and Mary Kean
    • Anne Luis, address given as Five Alley.       Mary was baptised on 10th Jun e1854.  Her godparents were Daniel Luis and Bgt Heenan
    • Mary Lewis, no address given was baptised on 21 March 1849.  Godparents  were Michael Gleeson and Mary Carroll
    • Bridget Lewis Kilcommin, baptised 14th April 1842.

I cannot find a child named James on Roots Ireland, nor can I locate a Marriage Certificate.

You may not be aware that Civil Registration only started in Ireland in 1864, and we are depending on Church Records for births and marriages up to this time, with Church Records only commencing around 1820's or so, depending on the Parish.

I tried to find out a marriage certificate for some of the above females, but again was unsuccessful.  However the 1901 Census shows that Mary Lewis was still living in Derrinclare in 1901, age given as 53.   She was shown as single.

Can I just mention that the townlands of Derrinclare / Five Alley and Kilcommin are all attaching townlands in the Parish of Shinrone, and the Priest at the time may just have put in the variety of townlands at that time.   Bear in mind that most irish at that time were illiterate.

Please come back to me if you think I can be of any further help.   I can send you on the Certificates showing the above baptisms and the 1901 Census if you want to email me at dunkerrin@irelandxo.com.

    Best wishes

    Dolores Whyte
