Born Ballykeel, Lisburn, Ireland, UK. (near town of Annahilt). Moved into Belfast to work at a large store. At age 22 he met evangelist D.L. Moody. Soon attended Moody School at Mount Herman in U.S.A. and then Hastings College, Nebraska At the age of 37 graduated Princeton University in Theology. 1903 Ordained as a Minister (Presbyterian Church of Canada) at Fort Francis in New Ontario. Posted to Manitoba then 1905 to Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Met school teacher Violet Goldsmith and engaged 28 days later. Homesteaded and farmed while becoming the first Minister of the Knox United Church in Drumheller, Alberta.
