Rigney Family - Mary Margaret and Patrick (Birr Offaly)

Hi Lynda,

I looked at birth records for Rigneys in Birr (aka Parsontown) by the names you listed--there are several Marys, Margarets, Patricks-- but none of them had the parents' names you gave. I looked in the civil marriage records at irishgenealogy.ie and there were no marriages between a Troy and a Rigney from 1864 to 1890. Are you absolutely sure of the parents' names? Sometimes parents' names on a death record, for instance, are wrong, as they are given by a third party who may have been mistaken. I've also seen a stepparent's name listed as a parent's name on a death record. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks Eamonn. I strongly suspect you are correct n assuming Mary supplied incorrrect information. Family oral history states Mary had an illegitimate child, before she wed Soren Andersen  (here in NZ). Also (Nana) Mary told me directy she fiddled with her birth dates but I did not question her further about this, So she could have been born earlier than1894,. Margaret was  definitely an older sister as they came out in the boat together to NZ (I have the immigration rrecord for them both) and nana (Mary) talked about Margaret sometmes. Grandad talked about their brother Patrick coming to NZ and living with them (Mary and Soren,) but he threw Patrick out as he was a drunk. I have also had contact from Jenny Vilgoen who believes her grandmother was the iliigitimte daughter of Mary. ( I have had no further information from Jenny,

So to recap, Mary posssibly had an ilegitmate child and the iniforation on her wedding certficate and immigration record may be wrong because of this. Mary has stated (whe she was alive, that she payed with her birth date ( so what else has she played with I wonder? Havig had a child could explain her coming out to NZ perhaps playing with her parents names.

PS: I wonder if her mothers name on Mary's wedding certificate, instead of beng Mary Troy, was meant to be Mary ??? FROM Troy.

leaving out . . the pairs Christian names . . and only searching for a " Marriage " of those names  . . 1875 - 1885 timeline . . here's what I got . .

When I search Ancestry . . Birth .. Rigney . . .Birr ( a.k.a Parsonstown ..back then )  around 1838  . . in " Kings County " (back then)

I find ( an you will see - on Ancestry ) quite a number of RIGNEY births recorded . . . ( maybe one family ???  )

Given your info. ...I then searched our Census of 1901 . . .Patrick . . would be approx. 16 y.o. . . access Census . .

I am 24 years old and my family originate in westmeath but before that my great grandad came from offaly, im trying to do a family tree for my grandad and was hoping, since you are following Rigneys that maybe we could work together. as there was a margaret rigney who was my grandads aunt but she lived in Simons town or fishhook in South Africa but sadly she passed away a few years ago.
