The house that Charles J. Haughey was born in has a plaque over the door with the inscription, "In this house was born An Taoiseach, Charles J. Haughey T.D. on the 16th December 1925`'. Haughey was one of seven children. He entered politics as a local councillor in Dublin in 1953 and was first elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fáil TD in 1957. He held many profile positions including Minister for Justice 1961/1964, Minister for Agriculture 1964/1966, Minister for Finance 1966/1970, Minister for Health 1977/1979, Minister for Social Welfare 1977/1979, before becoming Leader of Fianna Fáil in 1979.
