Born in Belmullet, County Mayo, in 1829, to James Mulligan and Catherine Kelly. Religion Roman Catholic.
Orphaned during the Famine, and worked in the Ballina workhouse. Immigrated to Australia on the Inchinnan, as part of the Earl Grey Scheme, landing at Sydney, New South Wales, in 1849, at the age of 19. Was housed at the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney; was then allocated work as a house servant with James Henry Crummer, JP, in Parramatta (suburb of Sydney.) Crummer was sent to Maitland as the police magistrate, and Catherine went too. There she met and married John Matthew Carter, an Englishman and former convict, who had been granted his ticket of leave, and was working as a police constable for Crummer. Carter's religion is stated as Protestant.
John and Catherine were married in the RC church at East Maitland on 5 September 1854. From there, they travelled around New South Wales, working on the railway lines which were being laid to service the fledgling colony. They eventually settled in Gunnedah, New South Wales, where they raised five children (poss six, have to check.)
Catherine died in Gunnedah in 1911 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery there, in the RC section. John died in 1913 and is also buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery at Gunnedah, in the Protestant section.
