John McLane was the third child of John McLane/McLean and Hannah Murphy. The family migrated to the UK in about 1862, living for a time in Wooler and finally settling in Newcastle upon Tyne. Other siblings were Patrick 1848-1927, Michael 1854-1911, Anthony 1860-? and Hannah 1864-?. All the siblings were born in County Mayo apart from Hannah, who was born in Wooler Northumberland. In the 1921 census, Patrick cites his place of birth as Kilcommon Mayo, but in the same census John only cites County Mayo.

John married Catherine Lambert on 1st June 1882 at Willington Quay Northumberland. They had a number of children John 1883-1953, Mary 1885-1976, Anthony 1887-1915, my decendant Hanorah 1889-1945, Martin 1891-1979, William 1894-?, Catherine 1896-1898, Margaret 1898-1968, Agnas May 1900-1915? and Leo1902-1903.

Through DNA matches, I have traced some of the Murphy's and McLean's to the townlands of Belmullet, Derrycorrib and Bunahowen areas. It is also possible that they were from Pullathomas which is quite close to Kilcommon. I have wondered if this is what Patrick McLean was referring to in the 1921 census?

I would be keen to get some local information on any McLeans or Murphys still in the area, or any graveyards that may have headstones still ledgible enough to read from early to mid 1800's that may give me some clues.

I have exhausted all digital records and am hoping to visit the area in the next 12 months.
