This is my gt grandfather, though born in Ireland, left there with his first wife Jane Tanner in circa 1840, across the Irish Sea to Ayr, Scotland. Jane died in 1867 and upon William's death, his former housekeeper, Margaret McVey, is listed in his 1885 civil death form as his 'widow', although no evidence that they married. They had three daughters, Margaret, Janet and Mary, my grandmother.
