I'm not going to be any help on your early generation brick wall, but do find the surname Dowdle interesting. I have a DNA connection to a descendant of a Patrick Dowdle (ca1825-ca1858) who married Anne Hughes in Oughaval Parish in 1850 (I believe she was the sister to my James Hughes). They had a son named "Wiliam" (b: ca1855) which I thought as an odd given name for an Irish Catholic family. The family immigrated first to Chorlton-Upon-Medlock, Manchester, England where a son Patrick "Henry" Dowdle was born in 1853. Then Patrick Sr., died (either in England or Ireland), and his widow Anne immigrated to the Chicago USA about 1857, followed by Patrick and William about 1865. I don't know how Patrick, Sr. fits for his ancestry though, but the two given names of Henry and William to your own references are intriguing. .... As an aside: I came across a John Dowdle in: Marquis of Sligo's rental to May & Novr. 1844. in what appears to say Drimminduff for the towland, but have no clue where that is in County Mayo (and a James Hughs in the same location may fit to my own Hughes kin?)
Henry Dowdle (hatter) lived in Fairgreen Westport 1797-1867. My Gt gt grandfather William his son born Westport 1843 and died in England 1908. On the UK census it showed a sister Catherine Dowdle born 1836 It showed their uncle John Dowdle 1792 which I assume was Henry's brother. There may of been another brother Patrick 1789. I have hit a brick wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated

That is very interesting as William Dowdle (Henry's son ) married Catherine Poland and lived in Cholton upon Medlock, they are my gt gt grandparent's.

The 2nd-4th cousins that have communicated with me cannot connect the dots.There seems to be someone missing.

I cannot confirm William Dowdle's
mother ,Henry's wife.
The mystery continues.
I am hoping to visit Westport in 2023 ( I live in Australia) I would like to try and find out where Henry was buried. It might lead to the parish church or gravesite.
I love having Irish roots.

Boy those surnames are all strong County Mayo names.. O'Malley/Malley, Moran and Grady.

another question what documentation links your William Dowdle (your 2nd GGF) to this Henry: "Henry Dowdle (hatter) lived in Fairgreen Westport 1797-1867."? In looking at some records I see quite a few references to Henry Dowdles in various places in County Mayo, so wonder how you settled on the one born in 1797.

Hi, I have a copy of Williams marriage certificate to my gt gt grandmother and Henry's death information came from irishgenealogy.ie and loan applications all showing Henry as a hatter.
