Mathew was the son of Patrick Finn and Mary Halligan. He was born about 1833 and died at Dalton (alt. Dalteen), County Mayo, on November 6, 1910. His name was first on the list of landholders in Dalteen in Griffith's Valuation. He was married to Anne Coleman of Dalteen on 1 February 1954. She died in childbirth in 1868. Mathew and Anne had six children: Mary, Patrick, James, John, Anna, Sarah and Matthew. Sarah and Matthew died in infancy. Mary lived with her own family in nearby Cloonmoor. Patrick, James, John and Anna emigrated to the United States.
On November 13, 1869 Mathew married Bridget Jennings. They had five children: Sarah, Catherine, Thomas, Matthew and Michael. Thomas emigrated to the United States, while his siblings remained in Ireland.
