James Thomas Moriarty was the fourth child of Thomas Michael Moriarty and Mary Moriarty. Born in West Ballyferriter, Dunurlin, he was baptized in October 1856. Sponsors were Michael Manning and Ellen Manning. In 1881, he married Mary Catherine Sheehy, from the neighboring townland of Ballyaglisha. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Moriarty and Michael Sullivan. They settled in West Ballyferriter and had eight children: Ellen; Catherine "Katie;" Rev. John James; Patrick James; Rev. Michael James; Mary Eileen (Sister Mary Brendan); Thomas "Tom"; and James. Most of the children emigrated to America, settling in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Son James eventually returned to Ireland circa 1930 and married Margaret Kennedy of Ballymore. They took over the family farm in West Ballyferriter after the death of Thomas and Mary.
