Edmund was born in East Gullane, County Kerry the son of Edward English and Mary Lawlor. He was the only one of his immediate family to immigrate to the United States, although the entire Lawlor family except his mother and his grandfather who we assume was deceased did as well as some of his English uncles and cousins. At least some of his English relatives are still in the area.
Edmund according to family tradition, left his family home when his mother married John Carmody. This is understandable, a younger man was likely to live for quite some time, and the land that had been in his mother's possession would now be in that of her husband rather than going to her sons. Sailing with Edmund on the Abyssinia which arrived in New York on 11 June 1879 is James Carmody, his stepbrother. Both Edmund and James are in Minnesota by the time of the 1880 census.
Edward settled in St. Paul, Minnesota after he married Anna Baier the daughter of Mary Delmore (bn in Roscommon) and John Baier(l) (bn in Bavaria). They had 11 children. Edward worked as a switchman and a towerman for the Great Northern Railway up to the time of his death on 23 Dec 1920.
