Margaret states in a letter to US Bureau of Land Management that her parents told her she was born in County Down, Ireland. Approximate birth year was between 1822 and 1825. She stated her father was well-known in Jacksonville, Benton County, Alabama, USA as he was a free-mason in Hiram Lodge #42 of that city. She further states she is unable to furnish a copy of her deceased father's naturalization papers because she does not remember when said naturalization papers were issued.
Margaret married George Caldwell in 1852 in Talladega, Alabama, USA. George was born in Newberry, South Carolina, USA.
Margaret was well-educated, and had very good penmanship. In her letter she was well spoken and offered prayers for the recipient of the letter.
After her husband passed away (appx 1886), Margaret and her children migrated to Montgomery County, Arkansas, USA with her brother-in-law and his family.
The brother-in-law, Joseph Caldwell (also born in South Carolina) was married to Mary Johnson, who was also born in Ireland. I have found no indication that Margaret and Mary were related other than through marriage to the Caldwell brothers.
