Stayed in Ireland

John and Julia (Burke) Walsh had ten children.  All ten emigrated to St. Paul, Minnesota but two returned to Ireland, daughter Anne who married Thomas O'Brien and son John who settled on the land the family had occupied since at least 1801 (supported by Lease agreement).  His descendants are still there today.  John traveled to St. Paul to see if he and Julia should emigrate, but decided that they would remain in Ireland.

Derrycoosh was among the holdings of Roger Palmer one of the worst of the famine landlords.

  • My great great grandmother Annie O Malley. Her mother was Catherine Walsh b. circa 1818 of Derrycourane Islandeady. Catherine had a sister Bridget who married an O Mally.(old photo which says To my dear sister Catherine Welch from your loving sister Bridget O Mally )  We know nothing of this Walsh family as Annie was illegitimate. Catherine is with her in Cheshire in 1871 census.

Derrycoosh and Derrycourane seem to be quite close . I drove past Derrycourane recently and the road on google map seemed to be a small enough area.

We would love to find Walsh relatives so we can place the family.

    Perhaps they are related ?

  • Yes the townlands are within 10 km of each other........Unfortunately there are lots of Walshes all through the area.  An 1801 lease lists eight Walshes among others leasing the land from the Palmers.  I've tried to sort them all out but it's nearly an impossible task even with the many records I've found and that doesn't count all the outlying townlands.
