Jane was born on 3rd September 1854 and christened in the Methodist Church in Ballina. She later moved to England and married Arthur Norton in Haswell, County Durham.  Her father's name was John Hamilton Scott but he may not have been local to Ballina.  Family tradition suggests that he came from outside the area but that her mother's family farmed in the locality. I don't have her mother's maiden name which is a block on further research.  Does anyone know of this family or is able to check the local church register to find out her Mum's name?

Additional Information
Date of Birth 3rd Sep 1854
Spouse (First Name/s and Maiden/Surname) Arthur Norton
Place & Date of Marriage Haswell, County Durham
Father (First Name/s and Surname) John Hamilton Scott

hope one of these might help unfortunately i am unablle to check roots ireland but i did have a look at the surname in roots ireland and no search was found so it is possible that John was Hamilton or Scott and mother was Scott or Hamilton

  • thank you.  That's interesting and a good way of looking at things.  I have found a JH Scott in Ballina with dog licences which suggests the father stayed on in the area.  I have also found marriages between a John Scott and ladies named Harriet.  Neither is in the right locality but of course they may not have married locally.  I was hoping posting here might pop up some information on siblings maybe as it would be unusual for a couple to only have one child and then that might be a way back

  • I just have this whcih is not very helpful.  It gives a Christian name for her Mum or at least the name she was known by.  I also have a copy of her marriage certificate which gives her father's middle name as Hamilton ( the name she gives to her only son).  This gives her father's occupation as "Painter". I have not seen the original. Family story is that mother's family are farmers and he was not a great match or local to the farm.  I have found two John and Harriet Scotts but neither is an obvious match - wrong location and denomination. While presbyterians will sometimes use Methodist services where there is no presbyterian church to hand there was one in Ballina at the time so there is no obvious reason to use the methodist chapel although of course they could have preferred that church for some reason. I have written to the Church where she was baptised to see if there are more details there.  I also wondered if the family were still in the congregation but no reply.

  • Thank you.  I was not aware of that site but it won't work with Jane as the family are Protestant- almost certainly Methodists but I did try and look at other denominations just in case as strange things can happen.
