Christopher Fox 1806

Back to List

My 3rd great grandfather Christopher Fox born abt 1806. He has been quite difficult to track with no birth or death records found. I have been looking for any hint of him I can since having my DNA tested and I would love to hear from other Fox families in Ireland in hopes we might somehow connect.

Christopher married Margaret Byrne in Philipstown on 4th Nov 1836. There was a John Malloy and Mary Kiernan as the witnesses.

Margaret and Christopher has a daughter Bridget in the same year and a son Michael in 1842. I've been unable to find birth records for either.

Margaret was baptised on 01 Feb 1845 in Gorteen, Killeigh.

Honoria was baptised in Gorteen, Killeigh in April 1847 and the sponsers were Denis Fox and Ann Nolan.

When Michael and his mother Margaret travelled to Australia in 1866, Margaret was listed as a widow. On her death cert is states daughters Honoria and Margaret as deceased. Bridget had travelled to Australia prior to Margaret and Michael as a servant.

  • Hello,

My family are also originally from Philipstown Offaly.
My 4 x great grandfather was tried at Philipstown in 1826 and transported to NSW in 1827 on board the Cambridge.
His brother Patrick Halin married Catherine Fox, their daughter Margaret arrived in Nsw in 1841 originally going to Bungendore where her uncle Thomas Halion resided she married her first husband in Bungendore before moving to Victoria.
Some of Margarets siblings emigrated to Victoria also.
    this family maybe worth researching?
Hapoy to share what information I have.

  • Did you do your DNA with ancestry?
I know a few of Margaret's (Catherine's daughter) descendants have and I could ask them to see if you are a match to them?

  • Hello Fox family

I am hoping to find my Fox ancestors too. My gg grandmother was Anna Fox born in hehe Ireland.  All we actually know about her is she married John Kelly who was born in Westmeath c1835. They married c1857 rumour is Longford.  Moved to Western Australia 1861.  Would love to find more info on my family too.  I believe they were more north than just Westmeath, John is in Athlone after the Crimea War, Johns dad was Ardagh.

  • Hi Ada, I am sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you. The Fox's are an elusive bunch! DNA has given me some short leads but nothing concrete. Our Fox name has slowly dwindled and is dying out unfortunately. I'll keep an eye out for your Anna in my research.
