Armagh was awarded city staus in 1994 by official charter from Queen Elizabeth II.
Armagh had previously held this status, going back as far as the 13th century, but lost it in 1840.
The case was put forward that Armagh should righfully be regarded as a city, as its Archbishop also holds the title of Primate of All Ireland.
The announcement that Armagh would be regranted its city status was made by Prince Charles to commemorate the 1,550th anniversary of the tradtionallt accepted foundation of Armagh by Saint Patrick.
