Winifred, 18 and her sister Johanna, 16, arrived in Sydney, Australia on the John Knox 29 April 1850. They were selected from the Cashel workhouse to emigrate to Australia under what became known as the Earl Grey Scheme (1848-50). At that time their father, John, was dead and their mother, Bridget, was still living at Cashel. Bridget followed and was in Sydney by April, 1853.
